Our Holy Guardian Angels

“God our Father, in your loving providence you send your holy angels to watch over us. Hear our prayers, defend us always by their protection and let us share your life with them forever.” (Opening Prayer for the Memorial of the Guardian Angels).

October 2 is the Memorial of the Guardian Angels. God’s love entrusted to each one of us a personal pure spirit holy guardian angel to light and guide and to rule and guard us. He gave his angels charge of us to guard us in all of our ways. (See Psalm 91:11).

Regarding little children, Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 18:10). They are God’s “ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation.” (Hebrews 1:14).

“From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 336).

God said, “See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him.” (Exodus 23:20-21). While St. Peter was chained in prison by King Herod, his guardian angel brought him to a place that God had prepared for him. St. Peter was attentive to his angel and heeded his voice.

The angel came to the sleeping Peter, “struck him on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his hands.  And the angel said to him, ‘Dress yourself and put on your sandals.’ And he did so. And he said to him, ‘Wrap your mantle around you and follow me.’ And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.  When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him.  And Peter came to himself, and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’’’ (Acts 12:7-11).

Let us pray to our holy guardian angel, “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”
